Logan County was established in 1871 and was named for James Logan, an early settler of the region. The Logan County seat, Paris was named for Paris, France, in 1874 and incorporated on February 18, 1879.  Paris was formed on the Old Military Road between Little Rock and Fort Smith, and 5 miles south of the Arkansas River.

White pioneers settled the area about 1820 and the villagers threw up a one-story frame courthouse. The original wood Logan County courthouse was replaced in 1928 by the stone structure that now stands in Booneville. The "new" wooden courthouse in Paris was replaced by a stone structure in 1908.

In the 1890s, Paris was a bustling city of 800 people, 2 newspapers, a bottling works company, 9 general stores and the Paris Academy.

Coal mining flourished in the area. By the 1890s, Paris was a bustling young city. Mining became the community's main industry by 1917, but in 1945 sooty miners deserted their tunnels, leaving small trains standing at the mouths of the mines.
